All businesses, large or small, gain their direction and impetus from a continual series of discussions, collaborations, and decisions, involving groups of people with differing ideas, concerns, and motivations. The degree of communication between these individuals is key to the eventual success of any project, and yet many of the most vital pieces of information are withheld from other members of the group, causing any plan or decision taken by them to be seriously flawed.
This critical missing data is contained in the “Internal Dialogue” of all of the individuals involved in the decision-making process. This refers to all of their private thoughts, concerns, and motivations, which they would not be comfortable sharing with the rest of the group, yet which are more important than their actual words (“External Dialogue”), because it is the Internal Dialogue that will ultimately drive their actions.
| External Dialogue |
Internal Dialogue |
| “That sounds like a good idea.” |
But it won’t work, so I won’t waste any time on it. |
| “Of course I’ll put in the extra time.” |
Until I can find another more interesting project. |
| “Yes, I can re-engineer this process.” |
But not too well, or I might be out of a job. |
The consequences are…
- Participants may be less committed to a successful outcome than they seem
- Some may be actively or unconsciously working toward a different outcome
- Avoidable issues may be overlooked or ignored
- Misunderstandings may continue unchecked, or may be compounded
- Confidence in the final outcome is low

SchellingPoint’s innovative SP/Dialogue™ training tools enable participants to create a safe environment in which team members are able to communicate their personal concerns, to check the validity of their inferences, and to raise difficult or previously undiscussable topics for discussion, thereby ensuring a better-informed foundation on which to base plans, decisions, strategies, and agreements.
SP/Inference – Our SP/Inference skills and tools enable business people to recognize and convert incomplete recall and inaccurate reference into tested data, which results in higher quality decision-making.
SP/Discussion - The difficult-to-discuss thoughts between reports and managers, peers, employees and customers, or any relationship pair, hold enormous value. SP/Discussion provides the skills and tools to approach business issues previously considered “untouchable” and unlock new capabilities in the relationships.
SP/Collaborative Design – Scalable from individual, immediate, in-the-moment decision-making situations to team events, the collaborative design process allows creation of the most complete and sustainable designs of solutions to problems and opportunities. This training is a pre-requisite for facilitating using SP/Solve.
